Solace Women’s Aid

Director of Finance and Resourcing, Retna Thevarajah, recognised that the Solace Women’s Aid head office was hindering the development of the organisation due to:

  • Large, L-shaped desks limiting the number of staff that could fit into the space
  • Clutter hindering productivity and the transition towards a paperless office
  • Poor ergonomic chairs harming staff health and comfort
  • Out-of-date colours and worn unmatched furniture and flooring creating an ugly, unappealing workplace
  • Poor natural light, despite large south-facing windows

Working together with Rype Office, a new layout and colour scheme were developed to address these issues while fitting an additional 11 desks into the same space, a 20% increase in the number of workstations.

The new design transformed the office, with:

  • An improved layout to make the most of the available space
  • Straight desks sized to meet the needs of staff with light-coloured tops to make the most of the natural light
  • Additional storage space in the form of under desk drawer units and lockers to reduce clutter
  • A delineated walkway to improve privacy and add colour – created with low-cost reclaimed carpet tiles
  • Improved natural light management with white and light grey walls and light grey blinds
  • Ergonomic chairs to improve staff wellbeing

Furniture and flooring was provided and installed by Rype Office within budget and on a tight timeframe to minimise impact on the operation of the business, enabling continued operation of the crisis hotline.

Key to revitalising the look of the office was the replacement of the worn hallway carpet tiles with reclaimed tiles:
