Having launched its free-to-use Second Life Furniture mark in 2023, the Office Furniture Remanufacturing Association has reported the results for the first 11 projects using the mark, which ranged from 2,000ft2 to 100,000ft2 gross internal area.
All projects achieved over 60% second life furniture (including reused, refurbished and remanufactured) with a substantial reductions in carbon emissions and waste.
Four projects achieved 90% second life furniture or higher, with one achieving 100%.
Cost savings were achieved for all projects except one, which was higher because higher spec remanufactured furniture was selected than was costed new.
All projects are attractive and no compromise in aesthetics was reported or observed.
No relationship between gross floor area and percentage second life furniture was found.
And the location or sector of projects had no statistical relationship with the percent second life furniture.
These results support organisations confidently aiming for at least 60% second life furniture, knowing that they can save money, substantially reduce carbon emissions, and achieve an attractive aesthetic – regardless of the location, sector or size of the space.
